How a shadow-plane hound ended up walking beside a thief.
Most wizards who take the Improved Familiar feat end up with something impressive to show off, a pseudodragon, a stirge, some minor status symbol. Bob got a hound that doesn't exist properly in this plane half the time. He's never seemed to mind. In a life built on not being seen, a familiar that can go nearly invisible outside full daylight is worth more to him than anything with wings.
The link between them runs both ways. Bob can see through its senses, deliver touch spells through its bite, and feel roughly what it feels across a mile of distance. It's the closest thing to trust Bob has left in his life, which says as much about the mastiff as it does about him.
