City of Korone

Auriglacis

Lit gold around the clock, deep under the ice, with no true night and no true day.

Auriglacis sits where Korone's ley lines run thickest, and the city has been built to make the most of it. Groves of bronze wood ring every district, burning with the same steady golden light day and night. There's no true dawn or dusk here, just the trees' own patient light, brighter than a full moon on the surface but gentler than open daylight, somewhere honestly in between.

The city's lava-river docks are its real claim to importance. Auriglacis sits at the junction where several of Korone's underground channels meet, making it the closest thing the realm has to a capital of the depths. Barges bound for Vathia, for the Iüdex Ice Prison, or for settlements that don't officially appear on any surface map all pass through here first.

Life in Auriglacis runs on a rhythm that has nothing to do with a sun no one down here has ever seen. Shifts, trade, and worship all keep time by the bronze wood's glow instead, which never brightens or dims enough to tell you what hour it is. Newcomers from the surface tend to find this unsettling. People born in Auriglacis find the opposite: a surface day, with its rising and setting, apparently strikes them as needlessly dramatic.
